The Grand Canyon

The most powerful impact of the Grand Canyon, for me, was the silence.  It was like winding down an underwater staircase - the silence kept intensifying.  All the simple sounds were amplified....the crunch of the rocks beneath my shoes, the skittering lizards.  It occured to me that one way to stimulate the senses is to take them away.

And of course the view was breath-taking.  The rim is surrounded by piney brush, so when you do come up to the edge, it happens all at once.
