In advance of The 10,000 Strangers Campaign, we will be posting a new postcard memory every morning. All of the postcards in this 30-card series were created by 4th and 5th graders at Horace Mann Elementary School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in response to the simple prompt "tell a story you don't want to be forgotten." Imagine the archive we'll have when these stories start arriving from all over America, and from all generations.
Each of your memories is a short SCENE, made up of thousands of micro sense details. Our brain is a super powerful Storytelling Machine that organizes and re-organizes these scenes into a story. That story is YOU. Your identity. Who you are. Because you have an identity, you’re able to CONNECT, which allows you to GROW and thus create new memories...and the whole process repeats.

This story took me back to when I was 10 years old and my family was moving. It was the night before the big move and the movers had been at our house packing up boxes all day. When it was time for bed,I discovered that my most favorite stuffed animal-an orange lion named Tangerine that my grandmother had made for me-was missing. I remember being really upset. My parents were forcing me to leave all of my friends, and now my lion that I slept with every night was gone.My parents searched through boxes until they located him. I must have been such a pain. However, that lion was such a comfort to me at the time. His neck couldn't support his head and it flopped down over his chest and his coat was wearing thin, but I loved him. My grandmother even mae me a new lion that year, but he never replaced Tangerine.I still have my orange lion.
